Every field employee tracking software pitch sounds the same: live GPS, beat planning, attendance, reports. The pitch isn't the problem. The problem shows up in the field, where signal drops, phones die, and reps find the one blind spot in your geofence within a day.
I've watched three separate teams roll out tracking apps that looked identical in a sales call and diverge completely six weeks later. The difference wasn't the feature list — it was whether the tool degraded gracefully when things went wrong.
The pattern is always the same. Tools that only work with a strong signal get abandoned. Tools that queue data locally and sync later survive.

That's a beat planning problem, not a GPS problem.

That last point matters more than it sounds. Reps who can see their own beat plan self-correct. Reps who can't just wing it and hope nobody checks.
Every vendor claims "real-time, pinpoint accuracy." Ignore it. GPS accuracy on a phone varies by 5-20 meters depending on buildings, weather, and the phone itself — no software fixes that, it's physics.
What actually matters is ping frequency and battery cost. A tool that pings every 30 seconds gives you a beautiful trail and kills the rep's phone by 2 PM. A tool that pings every 5 minutes with smart triggers (movement detected, geofence entry/exit) gets you 90% of the useful data at a fraction of the battery drain.
Ask vendors this exact question: "What's your average battery drain over an 8-hour shift with tracking on?" If they don't have a number, they haven't tested it with real field reps. That's a bad sign.
This is the one I harp on because it's the one that actually breaks deployments. Rural routes, basements, warehouses with metal roofs — signal drops constantly in real field work, and demos never show this because demos happen in offices with wifi.

Test this before you buy, not after. Put the phone in airplane mode, log three visits, walk into a different room, turn it back on. If anything gets lost silently, walk away — that's a data integrity problem that will show up as a payroll dispute or a missed client visit eventually.
Don't start with a feature comparison. Start with a two-week pilot using five reps, one weak-signal route, and the four-layer test above. Most vendors will offer this if you ask directly — and if they won't, that tells you something too.
The tools that pass the offline test and the beat-plan-vs-actual test are worth a longer look. Everything else is a nice dashboard that stops mattering by week three.
